500 Greatest Albums of All Time + 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die = The Full Spreadsheet

I prepared this Google Docs spreadsheet: in it, you will find the full merge of the two lists: the 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die and Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Given the overlap of 315 albums, the total list contain 1185 albums.

This previous post explain the analysis.

The albums mentioned by Rolling Stone are ranked from 1 (The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s…) to 500 (Eurythmics’ Touch). The albums from the 1001 Book have a few more details: year of release, label, name of producer, nationality, running time and responsible for art direction.

A quick footnote: this list presents original artist names. For my analysis, I made a few simplifications for more consistent rankings (for example, I merged Paul McCartney with Wings releases, and Frank Zappa with Mothers of Invention).

  1. Great document, thanks for putting that together – I agree with a lot of the Rolling Stone rankings, I still don’t fully get Velvet Underground & Nico’s appeal though – tough to argue with 4 Beatles records in the top 10 though!
