The majors  seek to maintain the broad appeal of their rosters. There are two main reasons for this:

  • first, a presence in a wide range of music types reduces the risk from fluctuations in demand for different types of music;
  • secondly, it maintains the major’s image as a comprehensive supplier of music to the customer and increases the likelihood that a new artist of whatever musical type will be able to identify with the company and therefore wish to sign with it.
